Do you mean, what can cause a person to have type 2 diabetes, in addition to having a poor diet? Being big, heavy, obese. Lack of exercise. genetic predisposition (Look Up MODY maturity onset diabetes of age) ethnic (Indian, Amerindian, Hispanic) Age. You do not need to be big, not exercise or eat a poor diet for type 2 diabetes. Genetics plays an important role. I knew a lot of fat, couch potatoes who never had a problem with sugar. They may be at risk for it, but never get it. Same thing with cancer. Not all smokers lung cancer, not everyone who may have lung cancer, smoking (as Dana Reeve). Here my short experience with diabetes: My grandmother was a great Sioux Indian off the reservation. My mother has had diabetes since 30. It has always been to insulin. It was a little stocky, but fat. Its sugar can go very high. She has been hospitalized this year with just one sugar 1420. My uncle died of complications from diabetes at 45. He was obese. I had gestational diabetes 3x. I was a size 2-4 when I failed my test for diabetes. I asked to be tested early (at 12 weeks instead of 26 weeks) because of my background family. The doctors told me I could not have potential. They said "Your thin, not old and active. You could not possibly be her." I insisted. They gave me the test. I was right and they were wrong. I've had two 9 lb, one 10 lbs, 11 pounds and baby. Three babies were a week early. Genetics plays a big role.
