Why do people with diabetes must take off their shoes and socks to go doctor?

I recently had an appointment physicians and their was a sign to the examination room saying that if you are diabetic, please remove your socks and shoes. Why diabetics should remove their shoes and socks? I do not know much about diabetes and I am curious.
